Settling in [ Week 1 ]

Dear Diary

I finally feel like I'm getting the hang of things around the lab now.  I'll be past my probation period soon and I'm looking forward to it.
Madeline threw a birthday party at her house and invited me along.  Had a pretty good time but something sort of weird happened.  One of her guy mates that was there, Ian, just up and starts flirting with me.  Compliments and stuff you know?  Then, out of nowhere, he pulls out this bunch of flowers!  I didn't know what to make of it.  I mean, yeah, I'm not seeing anyone at the moment; but I don't even know this guy.  Plus he must be at least ten years older than I am.  Eww.

Madeline just laughed when I told her, said that Ian is always a bit like that.  I just hope she knows better than to give him my number or anything, 'cause that could be awkward.

Well, Nighty night

Dear Diary

I past my probation!!!   I still feel as green as seaweed some days, but things are settling down and I know I don't have to worry quite so much about losing my position now.
Because I've been feeling a little lonely still in the house, I've adopted a chinchilla.  He is the cutest, funniest little thing you ever did see.  I think I'll call him Sparky.

I got him from a guy at a local odds-and-ends consignment shop.  Actually, I think he mostly deals in tonics and stuff which are supposed to have all these special properties.  Speaking to him you'd almost think he believed in magic; but no sane adult could still believe in that stuff, surely?
Well I'd wandered in there, pretty much by accident, on one of those days when you have nothing better to do than walk around town.  We got to talking and I told him about how I was still new in town and don't really know anyone.  We talked about other meaningless stuff and then somehow the subject got on to animals and what pets we'd had.  He said he'd been left this chinchilla; a friend had thought he might find a customer who'd like it and he'd let me take it for a song.  Before I'd really thought about it, I agreed and ended up taking the little guy home.  Not that I regret it, but I hope he doesn't make too much noise at night.

Goodnight diary and Goodnight Sparky.
